Community Volunteering training course

Wakefield Adult Education Service are offering a new Community Volunteering course for learners aged 19+ who are wanting to gain an understanding and prepare for a role within a voluntary organisation.


This course will teach you:

The role of a volunteer within a voluntary organisation

The activities of volunary organisations

The skills required to be a successful volunteer

The regulatory frameworks that may apply to being a volunteer


This course will take place at Manygates Adult Education Centre, with 2 hour weekly lessons for either 4 or 12 weeks.

Leadership courses available for VCSE colleagues

There are currently 2 free courses available from the Open University Centre for Voluntary Sector Leadership (CVSL).

The first course focusses on developing leadership practice in voluntary sector organisations and the second on collaborative leadership in voluntary sector organisations specifically. More information on these courses can be found here.

These courses are totally free, online and can be completed at the learners own pace.

The FutureNHS Collaobration are also facilitating a series of ‘learning clubs’ for groups and organisations who want to learn together, and have also supported others to develop their own learning clubs in local communities and places to help share practice and knowledge across organisations.

Skills for Care CPD Training Packages

Skills for Care and the University of Huddersfield, in conjunction with NHS Health Education England, have developed a series of training packages to assist health and social care staff with their continued professional development during the Covid-19 pandemic.

European Certificate in Palliative Care: HEE Funded places available!

As part of the West Yorkshire & Harrogate End of Life and HEE Workforce Strategy, a limited number of funded places are available for the European Certificate in Essential Palliative Care. These places are available for non-NHS medical, nursing staff and allied health care professionals working in care homes, hospices, social care and the voluntary sector within the West Yorkshire and Harrogate area.

These funded places will be shared across the 6 localities so places are limited and applications close on Tuesday 26th January 2021. Places are also available for NHS staff but the funding will need to be obtained elsewhere (e.g. CPD).

This course runs for 8 weeks, beginning in April 2021, and it is recommended that as well as attendance at the assessment day, the course will require around 50 hours of personal study, depending on your previous experience. More information can be found below:

Understand the context of elderly care in the UK, the range of care available and the regulations in relation to the Care Quality Commission (CQC).  Learn about maintaining health and well-being and common health issues affecting individuals in elderly care.  Learn about an individual’s rights and the legislation surrounding that topic, and how to minimise risk when working in elderly care settings.  Relevant to people working with the elderly both in and out of elderly care settings.

Certificate in Falls Prevention Awareness – Level 2
In this course you will look at falls within the context of adult health and social care and understand the impact and consequences that falling can have on an individual.  You will consider the benefits of falls awareness and prevention and gain an understanding of legislation and guidance relating to falls.  In addition, you will learn how to assess, monitor and review an individual’s risk of falling.

Certificate in Understanding Autism – Level 2
In this course you will discover what is meant by autism and the theories used in diagnosing the condition.  You will look at common misconceptions associated with autism and conditions that can co-occur.  You will learn about using a person-centred approach to support people with autism and how to incorporate the needs of the individual.  The course also covers the behaviour of individuals with autism along with support and coping strategies.

Certificate in Awareness of Mental Health Problems – Level 2
This course will develop your understanding of what is meant by mental health and mental ill health as well as looking at the legal frameworks that ensure high-quality care can be provided.  It will introduce you to the causes and symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression and help you to understand how those conditions can be managed.  You will learn about other mental health problems such as phobias, eating disorders, ADHD, bipolar disorder, PTSD, dementia, postnatal depression and schizophrenia and how they affect the individual and their family and friends.

Certificate in Information, Advice or Guidance – Level 2
In this course you will learn how to interact with learners by using effective communication techniques.  You will also develop an understanding of your own provision, the types of information, advice and guidance and how to be aware of boundaries within your job role.  You will learn about signposting, referral and accurate record keeping.

Certificate in Understanding Behaviour that Challenges – Level 2
In this course you will learn what is meant by challenging behaviour and the different types of behaviour this may include.  You will consider how behaviour can be a form of expression and a symptom of other things along with the possible reasons for behaviour that challenges.  You will look at the importance of identifying patterns of behaviour, recognising changes in individuals and the importance of supporting individuals to take avoidance actions.

Certificate in Understanding Nutrition and Health – Level 2
In this course you will be introduced to the principles of healthy eating and how diet is closely linked to health.  This will include studying the diseases that can result from a poor diet and the nutrients and food groups needed for a balanced diet.  You will also look at the nutritional needs and energy requirements of a variety of individuals, including special diets and food allergies.

Certificate in Understanding Specific Learning Difficulties – Level 2
This course will develop your understanding of specific learning difficulties and the different types of difficulty that individuals may face.  You will learn how specific learning difficulties affect an individual and those around them.  You will find out how to support individuals with specific learning difficulties and explore the legal and social contexts that impact on individuals.

Certificate in Principles of Working with Individuals with Learning Disabilities – Level 2
In this course you will learn about the services for people with learning disabilities.  It discusses the difficult history of how they have been treated in the past and looks at what are regarded as the best ways to support people with learning disabilities.  You will also learn about the importance of personalisation and person-centred working in social care and the positive impact it can have on lives of people with learning disabilities.

Certificate in Principles of Team Leading – Level 2
This course will introduce you to the principles of team leading, business structures and environment, and communicating work-related information.  You will learn about techniques for dealing with teams, organisational change, motivation, business planning, and verbal and written communication in the workplace.  The course also covers customer service, working relationships, health and safety, handling information and mail.

Certificate in the Principles of the Prevention and Control of Infection in Health Care Settings – Level 2
In this course you will learn the importance of maintaining a clean environment, learn the sterilisation process, learn how to safely handle sharps, learn how to safely handle laundry, understand the role of risk assessments, how legislation informs policy and practice and understand the roles, responsibilities, principles and processes in relation to cleaning, decontamination and waste management.

Certificate in Principles of Business Administration – Level 2
In this course you will learn about the different types of administrative services and how to provide them.  This will include arranging meetings, booking travel and accommodation, how to keep information secure and organisational structures.  You will explore how to manage conflict, store and retrieve information and to carry out business administration tasks.

Certificate in the Principles of End of Life Care – Level 2
In this course you will develop your knowledge and understanding when working in end of life care.  You will consider the factors that may influence your own behaviour when working with individuals and their families, and gain an understanding of loss and grief and how the impact can affect everyone.

Certificate in Principles of Customer Service – Level 2
In this course you will learn about the knowledge required by employers for staff working in a customer service role.  You will learn about the principles of customer service, effective delivery of service, legal and ethical requirements, different types of customer, the value of customer loyalty and different types of employer organisation.

Certificate in Equality and Diversity – Level 2
In this course you will learn about equality, discrimination, prejudice and diversity at work and in society in general.  You will look at the benefits of a fair and inclusive workplace or society, as well as the problems that can occur if there is unfair discrimination.

Certificate in the Principles of Care Planning – Level 2
In this course you will be introduced to the principles and practice of person-centred care planning and the values that underpin the planning process, as well as looking at your role in the process as a care worker.  The course also explores nutrition and hydration in health and social care settings.

Certificate in the Principles of Dementia Care – Level 2
This course will help you to develop an awareness of dementia, what it is and how it affects people.  You will learn about the common causes of dementia and how a person-centred approach to care can enable individuals with dementia to experience well-being.  You will also learn about the factors that can influence communication with individuals who have dementia.

Certificate in Customer Service for Health and Social Care Settings – Level 2
In this course you will learn about the delivery of customer service in health and social care settings and how this can be achieved in line with the expectations of customers.  You will also learn about the importance of teamwork in health and social care settings and how you can work in a team to achieve the required standards of customer service.

Certificate in Common Health Conditions – Level 2
In this course you will learn about how you can contribute to monitoring the health of individuals experiencing health conditions.  You will also gain an awareness of some common health conditions.

Certificate in Understanding the Safe Handling of Medication in Health and Social Care – Level 2
In this course you will be introduced to the types of medicine that you are likely to come across in your work environment, legislation about medication and sourcing of information and guidance.  It also covers the procedures of prescribing, dispensing, safe handling and disposing of medicine, and the roles and responsibilities of staff in relation to these procedures.  Residential, domiciliary and day care settings are also covered.

Certificate in Understanding the Care and Management of Diabetes
In this course you will learn about the different forms and causes of diabetes as well as looking at the risk factors for developing Type 2 diabetes, and gain knowledge on how to prevent or delay the onset.

Certificate in Understanding Dignity and Safeguarding in Adult Health and Social Care – Level 2
In this course you will learn the key principles of dignity, duty of care and safeguarding in adult health and social care settings.  You will also explore dilemmas and public concerns associated with adult health and social care and learn about the consequences when care principles are not upheld.

There is an expectation that you will complete your course of study in order to qualify for the FREE opportunity.  If you do not complete the course it is likely you would be invoiced for the full cost of the course.

New funded short courses available in January 2021

2 new short courses are due to start in January 2021, which are now available fully funded by Health Education Yorkshire and Humber for eligible health and social care staff and PIVO’s. Both 12 week courses will be delivered using a blended approach of teaching and learning strategies online, and students will be supported by the University of Huddersfield’s virtual learning environment. Students will be able to access the learning material flexibly so there will be no requirement for staff to be released for study leave or specific timed sessions.

These courses have been developed as non-credit bearing, to allow staff to access professional development opportunities which meet their needs without requiring you to complete academically demanding assessments. They have also been designed in response to the ongoing priority needs of practice partners in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
